How to Start a Business: What business should you get into?

You've been working for quite some time now, and you secretly fear what might happen after you retire or wonder if you really just want to have a desk job forever. Then, miraculously, you thought of putting up your own business. You ask yourself, “What business should I get into?” Ideally, the business should be something that does not require you to go through the process of "trial and error".

So, what is an ideal business for a person who has been employed for quite sometime now or even to an overseas Filipino worker? You have the option of starting a business on your own or get a franchise to spare you on the tedious details required from a start-up.

It is a given that businesses are not handed out on a silver platter. You will have to work hard for it to succeed. Here, you will be given some points to ponder if, and when, you decide to put up your own business:
  • Starting your Business
Before you even decide, you have to think hard and re-evaluate yourself. You have to set goals for your business, and what kind of business you prefer. It is vital that you identify it so you would know if franchising is the right business for you or just do it on your own.

  • What kind of Business?
Bear in mind that in any business, it is imperative that you know and you like what you are doing. You will be spending a lot of time, money and effort in running a business - would it not be better if you actually enjoy it?

  • Capital
You have to know how much you can afford to invest in a business. Your choice should not leave your bank savings empty.

  • You and Your Business
You have to identify your weaknesses and strengths and ascertain if these will have an effect on your business. How good are your skills in solving impromptu problems? Are you patient? Can you be on call anytime? There are many other questions to ask - but these are some of the questions that you have to ask to have a better understanding of yourself as a future business owner. To put it simply, can you handle the pressure?
Franchising is fast becoming a popular option these days. It is a simple and easy way to start your own business. It does not require you to shell out a big investment (depends on what kind of franchising business), but you will be able to benefit from the promotional, advertising and marketing support of your franchiser. Franchising lets you start a business that is already tried and tested. It is already prepared and you just have to operate it.

If this is a path you'd like to explore, it is suggested that you do the following before taking that big plunge:
  • Investigate the Business
Take the time to do a comprehensive research on the company. Call them for information. Visit their website and meet with them. You have to know for how long the franchise will be in existence and how many stores are already in operation. This will give you an idea if you still have a lot of choices for prime locations and if you can expect a sooner return of investment.

  • Meet the people behind the Franchiser
The president is an interesting person to meet with, but he is not the person that you will be calling in times of trouble. You have to know who is behind the operational and training support, and find out if he is competent enough. Meet with this person and make sure that every possible question is asked during the meeting.

  • Meet with existing Franchisees: What they have to say is very important because you will have information that will help you decide if this is the right franchising business for you. Try to visit as many existing franchisees as you can. This will ensure that you get the best possible realistic data on how the business is working for them.

  • Talk to Experts: If you are a newbie in franchising, do not try to do it all by yourself. Ask the experts in this field because they can help you familiarize yourself with how to go about the business process.

  • Decision Time: Now that you have gathered all the information that you may need, it is, therefore, time to make your decision and weigh if this franchise is for you. If this franchising company meets your standards and has everything that you want, then go for it. You will be investing your hard-earned money on it, and it is only natural to expect the best.
Whether you proceed in doing the business on your own or avail of a franchise, the above steps will surely help in understanding the business, market, competition, and assess the things that you need to work on to increase your chances of success.
