Organizing a children's party

"Organizing a children's party requires ample time for planning to ensure that the venue, logistics, and invitations are sent out on time," according to Jehan Chiong who organizes children's party as a hobby and sideline with a friend. "My friends and I began with this in 2006 as we got so busy organizing parties for our children. We enjoyed it so much."

This led to more referrals that got them into this business. Jehan has organized more than 30 parties to date.

We asked Jehan on what are the things a parent must know when organizing a party for a child.
  • Accessible venue.
Pick a location that is accessible to your desired majority of guests. Ideally, a venue must be reserved six months before the target date. Party details can be planned 2 to 3 months before the actual date.

  • Theme
If the child is already 7 years old and above, they already have an idea on the kind or theme of their desired party. It is best to get them involved to decide on this.

  • Decorations
It should be consistent with your theme. Balloon decors and styro cut-outs will bring any venue to life.

  • Time
Party should run between 3 to 4 hours. This is usually held on a weekend afternoon.

  • Format
Depending on the budget. It can be a simple party with games and magic show. As an option they can also add special talents like ventriloquism, puppet shows, jugglers, face painter, fortune teller, among others.

  • Food
Guests should enjoy the food as well, not just the entertainment. If it is in a private place, a caterer can be hired. You can also get additional food carts to serve french fries, ice cream and popcorn. Some would even add branded carts like Potato Corner, Starbucks, Fruits in Ice Cream, among others.

  • Photos and video
A good photographer and videographer should also be considered for this purpose.

  • Prizes and giveaways
They don't have to be expensive. As long as the quality is good, the kids will love it.

  • Invitation
A good invitation is important since this will give an impression on what the party will be like. This should be sent at least two weeks before the party.
Another option that parents have is to hire a party organizer. "They should check for previous works or party organized. In our case we use our website to show what we've done," said Jehan.
