Tips on Attending Business Functions

Every now and then, you get chosen to represent your boss or your company in a business function. These parties may seem like ordinary events where guests mingle freely with loads of food and drinks but don’t forget that these are still business functions. This means that behaving properly is still the norm (especially if you want to make sure that you get that promotion!).
Below are 10 Basic Protocols for Business Functions.

  1. Be appropriately dressed. It’s still a business function so your dress style should be muted.
  2. Study the guest list. Try to find out who will be attending the event. This is so you can prepare the topics that can be discussed and who to talk to that could help your career.
  3. Come on time. Take note of what time the event is supposed to start and be there by then and make a good impression on your boss.
  4. Mingle. Go around and socialize first before going to the food table (even if you’re really hungry already). Make small talks and friendly greetings.
  5. Behave properly. Showing-off and engaging in gregarious behavior is a no-no.
  6. Be polite. Greet everyone. Shake hands firmly and look people in the eye when being introduced. Smile.
  7. Eat moderately. Avoid piling too much food on your plate. Eat with dignity and avoid gobbling up the food.
  8. Drink moderately. This is a business event and not a party with your barkada. Remain sober until you leave.
  9. Don’t linger. If you have already mingled with your colleagues, spoken with your boss, and made small talk with the important guests, you may leave the event.
  10. Say goodbye. Don’t just slip out of the event. Make sure to say your goodbyes.
